Pencak Silat for Sports & Competition
Pencak Silat Tanding is a points based competition, with strikes only allowed to the body (that is protected by padding). Pencak Silat Tanding training includes techniques and drills for competition that incorporates a combination of striking, sweeping, tripping, trapping, catching, dropping, grappling, take-downs, locking, breaking and sparring.
The Sports and Competition aspect also has art form categories that includes individual open hand, weaponry and group art form.
NEW RULES ANNOUNCED!
New rules for Pencak Silat Sports & Competition have recently been announced. Notably, the age barrier for the ‘Seniors’ category has been increased to 45 years old (17 – 45 years). A ‘Master’ category has also been created which caters for athletes from 46 – 60 years and 61+ years. This will enable athletes who were not eligible due to the age restrictions, to now represent their country and compete in future World Pencak Silat Championships.
The National Pencak Silat Titles is held every year in a different State or Territory. The World Championships is held every 2 years in a different South-East Asian country. Those who excel at the National Titles may be invited to represent the Australian Team at the World Championships.
Lee Edmondson (Wirayudha) represents Australia in Tanding (60kg – 65kg) at the 2016 Pencak Silat World Championship in Bali, Indonesia.
